Java, or “Javanica” as it’s known in Nicaragua, has one of the most unusual origin stories in the Mierisch family’s coffee collection. Doctor Mierisch and his son, Erwin II, were driving home from the farm when they spotted a man selling fruit on the side of the road. They stopped for a quick purchase—and noticed the man had a bag labeled “Java.” Curious, they asked about it. The man claimed the bag held seeds of a rare coffee variety called Java. Erwin Jr. was skeptical, but the Doc felt for the man and decided to buy the seeds anyway. As it turns out, the man wasn’t bluffing—it really was the longberry Java variety. They suspect he may have once worked at a nearby coffee nursery that had gone bankrupt, a place known for its research and experimentation. And just like that, Java found its way to Nicaragua.
